The European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) was founded in 1974 under the auspices of the International Institute of Management (IIM), following an initiative undertaken by well-known industrial economist, Frederic M. Scherer, and his then junior colleague, Jürgen Müller. EARIE has since flourished under the administration of the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM). The aim of the Association is to provide a professional society for academics and practitioners engaged in the field of Industrial Economics. EARIE consists of its members (who meet and vote annually at the EARIE General Assembly), an Executive Committee (led by a President, with input from Officers & Directors), and two floating sub-committees (the Scientific Committee & the Local Organizing Committee) – the Chairs of which are carefully selected each year to manage the main event & attraction of the Asssociation – the EARIE Annual Conference.
The EARIE Annual Conference provides a yearly meeting place and focal point for delegates and members alike. At EARIE conferences (held in various European locations and schools), selected research papers are presented and discussed. Registered participants have the opportunity to meet old friends as well as make new ones during the social networking activities scheduled around this professional IE/IO event. 1989 saw the launch of the first essay competition for young economists, where three scholarships were awarded with the aim of encouraging attendance at the next (or a future) EARIE Annual Conference. In subsequent years, many more Young Economists' Essay Awards (YEEAs) have been presented by EARIE along with various sponsors. As of 2006, one of the YEEAs is dedicated to the late Paul Geroski – for the paper that makes the most significant policy contribution. As of 2013, Elsevier is the main sponsor of the EARIE YEEAs.
In March of 1983, the first issue of the International Journal of Industrial Organization (IJIO) [ISSN: 0167-7187] was published. Launched on the initiative of several EARIE members in collaboration with the Association, the IJIO is an international venture that aims at full coverage of theoretical and empirical questions in industrial organization – including classic questions of strategic behavior and market structure. The journal also seeks to publish articles dealing with technological change, internal organization of firms, regulation, antitrust and productivity analysis, occasionally featuring targeted special issues. In 2007, the IJIO began awarding the International Journal of Industrial Organization Best Paper Award in memory of Paul Geroski (Co-Managing Editor of the IJIO, 1987-1992) who passed away in 2005. Winning article(s) are selected by the journal editors and announced in the last issue of each year. EARIE is proud of the longstanding affiliation with its flagship journal IJIO and its current publisher Elsevier.
The new EARIE website and logo were unveiled at the EARIE 2022 Vienna conference (end of August) – and will be available online soon (early September) at the same link (www.earie.org) to replace this EARIE website (which will be archived).
Also announced was the upcoming 50th EARIE Annual Conference – EARIE 2023 Rome – to take place 24-26 August 2023 at LUISS in Rome, Italy. Looking forward to receiving your papers (submission Feb/Mar 2023) – and to seeing many members at this milestone event!
